Non-padded and half-padded bras give a natural shape and work under most tops. Padded bras add lift and coverage without the aggressive shaping of a push-up. Balconette bras have a half-cup construction that works beautifully under square necklines. Plunge bras have a deep V that stays hidden under low-cut tops. Push-up bras exist for the specific job of adding shape and cleavage under fitted pieces.

Then there's the wire question. Underwired bras give the most support and shape and are the right answer for most bust sizes. Wireless bras are for comfort — soft-cup or seamless construction that feels like nothing but still holds shape.

Full-coverage and side-support constructions are for larger busts, providing more shape and lift where it matters. Bandeau bras are strapless-only. Bralettes are the softest, most casual end of the spectrum.
