Balconette Bras

A balconette bra has a specific construction — half-cup coverage with a horizontal neckline that runs across the bust, and wide-set straps that sit further out on the shoulder. The shape lifts the bust from below rather than covering it from above, which gives more décolletage and a specific silhouette that's hard to get from other constructions.

The balconette works particularly well under square necklines, sweetheart necklines, and off-shoulder styles — anywhere the traditional V or U-cup of most bras would show above the garment. The wide-set straps also work under wide-neck tops that would show narrower straps.

The construction has to be done properly. The half-cup gives less coverage than a full-cup, so the fit at the underwire and cup edge matters more — a badly fitted balconette will let the bust spill over the top. Ours are cut so the cup properly contains the full bust at each size, with wire that follows the natural under-bust line.
